Andrew Norfolk is the Times reporter who first exposed the truth about the Muslim grooming gangs that have plagued the north of England.
Here he speaks to Bhai Mohan Sing Ji of the Sikh Awareness Society about the nature of child grooming and about how many of the perpetrators have turned out to be British Muslims.

Explaining why this horrific form of child abuse and exploitation is such a problem in the Muslim community is as difficult as it is controversial.
There certainly isn’t easy answer, and any number of factors must be taken into account if we are to establish exactly why these crimes occur.
But at the same time, the role that Islam has to play cannot be ignored. This is something we discussed back in May of this year, when we argued that Islamic beliefs could help explain why these men targeted such young children and why the victims were almost invariably non-Muslim.
Other factors that could go some way to explaining these crimes include:
- The growing influence of Sharia Law, which makes a fundamental distinction between both the rights of men and women and those of Muslims and non-Muslims.
- The self-imposed segregation of some sections of the Muslim community, which lessens their exposure to British cultural norms and standards of behaviour.
- The rhetoric of radical preachers, which encourages hatred of non-Muslims and an utter disregard for the laws of the land.
This is only a very limited list.
Given that so many different forms of extremism are so intimately linked with Islam, it is important that we are able to speak about these issues and help encourage the reform that is no desperately needed.
As Andrew Norfolk says, far too few in the Muslim community have been willing to accept that there is a problem and that something must be done. How much of this is down to the fact that the role that Islam may have played in these and other atrocities has been so regularly (and completely) whitewashed from the picture?
